European Grand Prix wins for Alexander Butler and Richard Howley 

Irish riders were in superb form today (Sunday) across Europe, with Meath’s Alexander Butler leading the way with an impressive win in the three-star Grand Prix at Vilamoura in Portugal. Butler guided Chilli B to the fastest clear in a 10-horse jump-off to take the winners prize of €12,550. Butler has high hopes for the 12-year-old stallion who is owned and bred by L.C.J. Berben: “I’m delighted to start off the first week here at Vilamoura with a win in the Grand Prix. I have very high expectations of Chilli B for next year for the outdoor season. I think this horse has a lot to give and I am really looking forward to it,” Butler commented. Ireland’s Conor Swail wins $134,000 three-star Grand Prix in North Carolina, USA

Co Down’s Conor Swail (IRL) and GK Coco Chanel recorded the only double clear round of the competition, to win last night’s (Saturday) $134,000 three-star Grand Prix at Tryon International Equestrian Center in North Carolina, USA. Swail and the 11-year-old gelding owned by Vanessa Mannix stopped the clock in 40.17 seconds, while Luiz Francisco de Azevedo (BRA) and Collin, claimed runner-up spot in 39.11 which was the fastest four fault score, ahead of Australia’s Rowan Willis who took third place with Diablo VII. Limerick’s Paul O’Shea, one of the hero’s from Ireland’s win in the Longines FEI Nations Cup Final in Barcelona last weekend, finished fourth with Skara Glen’s Chancelloress. Irish Show Jumping team secured their Olympic ticket riding in spirit for Kevin Babington

The drama and stakes couldn’t have been higher this past week in Barcelona, Spain, when the Irish Show Jumping team of Darragh Kenny, Cian O’ Connor, Paul O’Shea and Peter Moloney took to the arena at the Real Club de Polo, needing to finish ahead of both Columbia and Italy to secure the last ticket to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. All members of the Irish team and management wore specially commissioned Irish orange armbands embroidered with a four leaf clover and the words “BabingtonStrong,” in support of Irish rider Kevin Babington who suffered life-changing injuries in a fall last month in the United States. Horse Sport Ireland International Breeders Prizes 2019

Horse Sport Ireland are delighted to continue the international breeder prizes for 2019, to further recognise and reward the individuals responsible for breeding Ireland’s top Show Jumpers and Eventers. These prizes will be awarded to the breeders of the top three Irish-bred horses in the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) year-end rankings in both Show Jumping and Eventing. The WBFSH rankings are published online each month from April to October, with the final rankings being announced in early November. At this point the recipients of these breeders’ prizes will be announced. This is open to the breeders of all Irish-bred horses with sire, dam and breeder officially recorded, irrespective of the horse studbook of origin. The breeder’s prizes will work as follows. The Irish Show Jumping team have qualified for the Olympic Games for the first time in 15 years, by claiming a magnificent victory in today’s (Sunday) €1.25 Million Longines FEI Nations Cup World Final in Barcelona. A stunning performance from Rodrigo Pessoa’s team of Peter Moloney, Paul O’Shea, Darragh Kenny and Cian O’Connor, saw them finish the competition on a score of just one time fault, to beat the best teams in the world and book the all-important ticket to Tokyo 2020. The result means that for the first time in history, Ireland will be represented at an Olympic Games by teams in Eventing, Dressage and Show Jumping.
